In the follow-up to the February 7 edition of "Les Experts," Roland Gillet offers his analysis of the economic implications of Donald Trump's presidency: Europe will have to maneuver within the context of bilateral negotiations led by Trump, from which the European Commission is not invited. Employing his "businessman" style, Trump engages in microeconomic discussions directly with heads of state and corporate leaders, such as Bernard Arnault.

Even prior to Trump’s ascendance, American multinationals had already been compelling European states to compete with one another by negotiating job creations in exchange for tax incentives. Trump is set to amplify this intra-European competitive dynamic.

Roland Gillet also observes that Trump will likely adopt a continuity strategy concerning certain ideas from his predecessor, Joe Biden, such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which attracts European investments. For instance, ArcelorMittal has recently committed to investing $900 million in a new production facility in Alabama.

Trump imposes tariffs broadly, instilling a sense of unease, only to retreat on some decisions when companies agree to play his game by investing and creating jobs in the United States.
